Ghana Mine Workers’ Union Issues Ultimatum to BCM Ghana Over Unpaid End-of-Contract Benefits

Accra, Ghana – December 17, 2025 The Ghana Mine Workers’ Union (GMWU), affiliated with the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has escalated its demands for the payment of end-of-contract benefits owed to more than 700 former employees of BCM Ghana Limited, following a protest picket held on December 16.

The workers, many of whom dedicated up to 17 years of service to the company, were laid off over 10 months ago upon the expiration of their contracts. Despite contractual obligations under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, individual employment terms, and Ghana’s Labour Act 2003 (Act 651), BCM Ghana has yet to settle these entitlements, which the union says amount to millions of cedis.

During the December 16 demonstration outside BCM Ghana’s premises in Accra, the workers carried placards and chanted slogans emphasizing their rights. The workers described the delayed benefits as “our sweat and our blood,” underscoring the hardships faced by families reliant on these payments for livelihood transitions.

GMWU General Secretary, Abdul-Moomin Gbana, presented a formal demand notice to company representatives, highlighting exhaustive but fruitless attempts at resolution, including appeals to traditional leaders, parliamentarians, municipal authorities, and police.

The Union also raised concerns over alleged police brutality during an earlier protest in Tarkwa.Tragically, some former workers have passed away while awaiting payment, adding urgency to the matter. The union has issued a firm ultimatum: BCM Ghana must fully settle all outstanding benefits by Friday, December 19, 2025. Failure to comply, Gbana warned, will trigger escalated lawful industrial actions to protect workers’ dignity and rights.

The GMWU reiterated its commitment to advocating for mine workers’ welfare nationwide, calling on stakeholders and the public to support the affected members in this fight for justice.
